Whey protein and health benefits

Whey protein supplements are readily available in supplement powder form and have numerous health benefits in addition to improving blood flow as we saw in our last post.

They include:

  • It helps maintain blood sugar levels after a meal by allowing the pancreas to produce insulin more efficiently.
  • Promote healthy insulin production.
  • Improves general well-being by aiding in the optimal intake of fats, proteins, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins.
  • It enhances the immune function thanks to its immunoglobulins.
  • Preservation of lean body tissue (specifically during exercise) because it transports bioavailable amino acids and cysteine

Another recent study found that supplementation with a whey-derived peptide (NOP-47) in healthy individuals saw positive impacts on vascular function. Arm blood flow improved by 2.7% per minute, compared to no change in the placebo group.

Not only that, but the serum has been seen to prevent the development of allergies in babies at risk and benefit colicky babies.

No matter your age, adding quality whey protein to your diet can add tremendous health benefits.

Variations in the quality of whey protein

If you decide to add whey protein to your diet, a good choice for the reasons mentioned in previous posts, you should be careful which brand you choose, as there are often extreme variations in quality.

Most whey protein products contain whey derived from pasteurized dairy sources. If you have the ability and the budget, look for a whey protein made from grass-fed raw milk, so you can reap even more immune-enhancing benefits, compared to commercial pasteurized products.

Again, it is important to remind you that supplementation with whey or any other product is to supplement and enhance your diet, not as a complete meal replacement.

If you travel a lot, or are constantly on the go, supplementation with whey is highly beneficial and is a much better nutritional option than so-called “protein bars” or other processed convenience snacks.
