Tips for Selling Action Figures

I have been an avid action figure collector my entire life and today I am a proud owner of 1700 figures dating from 1975 to 2008. That is almost 33 years or three decades of collecting action figure toys. After all, owning rare and original figurines of my favorite comic book characters, TV series characters, and movie characters is an age-old hobby, and I have to admit, highly appreciated. Plus, I also know a lot of people who have crossed the 40 year mark, and still love collecting figures!

But from time to time I have to create space for new additions to my collection and to do that I have to sell some. If you’re also thinking of selling some of your figures, old and new, then you’re going to need a little help. Important things to know are:

  1. At what price can you sell your action figures?
  2. How or where you can find buyers for them.

Here’s an idea of the process of selling their action figures.

Price of your action figure

The price of your action figure will depend on several factors, such as:

Year of production: You cannot sell your 1989 figure for the same price as your 2006 figure unless it falls into the vintage category. A quick Google search for a particular figure should bring up the various details about the manufacturer and the date the figure was made. You can also visit popular auction websites and action figure stores to find out market prices for new and old action figures. This will give you a rough estimate of the type of price you need to quote.

Action Figure Status: Whether it’s a new figure, a vintage series, a used or packaged figure; you must verify the following before you can sell them:

  • They must not be torn or wrinkled in any way.
  • They should not have cracks in the plastic.
  • They must not be deformed in any way.
  • The plastic should not discolour.
  • Action figures should have no scratches or minor damage.

What you need to understand is that your action figures will be worth much more if they are in good condition.

Hot sellers: You should search the internet for action figures that are considered to be hot sellers. You can find several lists with some common names like GI Joe, Star Wars, Spiderman, Wolverine, etc. If you have an attractive product, you can get a good price for it. So start by selling those action figures, which are more in demand.

The best place to find out which action figures are in demand and which are not is the Internet. In fact, a website called Mania has compiled their list of the top 10 action figures of 2008, which are:

  1. Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th Part 7 The New Blood
  2. Batman and Joker – Inseparable
  3. Kurt Russell as stuntman Mike
  4. Cool Ram Mighty Mugg from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
  5. rorschach action figures
  6. G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra
  7. Alien
  8. Hal Jordan as Green Lantern
  9. Christopher Reeve Superman Limited Edition Statue
  10. Hellboy 18 Inch Deluxe Action Figure

But before you think about selling them, spend some time online to understand certain specifications. Manufacturers’ websites, as well as those of avid collectors, often list the technical specifications of various old (and new) figures, as well as their price guides.

You may find price differences on these sites, but that mainly depends on the year of manufacture and the manufacturer.

Now that your research paper is complete, you can start selling.

How or where to find buyers

There are several places from where you can get buyers for your action figures. One of the best platforms to sell figures is the Internet, thousands of people are looking for action figures on a daily basis. Remember, the idea of selling online is to go global! Action figure collectors are not just in the US, but all over the world. So when you get your product online, you’ll be able to reach a much larger audience.

Simply put, selling action figures may seem easy, but it’s always good to do your research before going on the market with your toys.
