Bringing home a chihuahua as a pet

Chihuahuas, considered among the smallest dog breeds, make excellent pets where there are no small children. This is because Chihuahuas are small, easy to transport, and just as easy to drop. These dogs have a soft area on the skull similar to that of humans and although the size of the spot reduces with age, the Chihuahua’s head is still very fragile. Small children often do not understand this and can harm the dog. The other reason Chihuahuas are not recommended for children is that they are sometimes temperamental animals and can be snappy when irritated. Unlike, say, a German Shepherd or Labrador, who will generally show uncommon wisdom and tolerance when it comes to children.

Chihuahuas are ideal for small apartments in cities. Because they are so energetic and small, they do a lot of running around inside the house and get their required share of exercise that way. If they are trained at home at a young age, they do not need frequent walks in the fresh air.

It is recommended that Chihuahuas be brought home when they are young because they become attached to their owner very quickly and have a hard time separating.

In recent years there has been a dramatic increase in Chihuahua births due to the dog’s popularity, particularly as celebrities and advertisers suddenly adopted him. It turns out that the Chihuahua market is, in fact, smaller than previously thought and many of these dogs ended up in shelters.

If you are in the UK, there is a British Chihuahua Club Rescue Association from where you can adopt a Chihuahua. Should you decide to do so, the adoption form is here http://www.the-british-chihuahua-club.org.uk and it is recommended that the adoption guidelines be properly researched.

In other countries there are also shelters for dogs that usually have chihuahuas. However, before adopting or buying a dog, you should consult a friend who has a dog and a trusted veterinarian because having a dog is a bit like having a baby: the responsibilities are huge and they do not remain small and harmless forever .
