And since there were so many questions about what these habits are, I decided to write a series of articles explaining the necessary or most desirable basic habit changes that will lead to the fastest change in your weight status.

What is the number 1 habit of a healthy and fit person?

Eat regularly, especially breakfast!

You’ve probably heard that before. In fact, it’s probably bouncing around inside your head even now and you’re probably still anchored to your mom’s voice telling you to eat breakfast, or her asking if you had breakfast yet as you rushed off to school. She probably heard them say that students who ate well in the morning were more attentive in class and were better students. Well, take a moment to thank mom for trying to set you straight. It seems true that if you eat a “good” breakfast you will be healthier, more alert, and function better throughout the day. This is part of the theory behind having a good breakfast. See that word breakfast? It literally means breaking the fast. That is the fast you did all night while you slept. It’s like a mini hibernation. While you slept, your body was busy using all the fuel (food, nutrients, etc.) you consumed during the day to rebuild and replenish the parts of your body that needed it. Anything that was left over was put into the garbage system and expelled from his body, or stored for another time. The amount reserved for storage depends on your body figures that will be available or not available in the near future. So your body has some kind of mechanism that monitors fuel availability and changes its storage needs based on that information.

Where does that information come from? Your own behavior. If you don’t eat regularly, your own body interprets it as a sign of food shortage. And if there is a food shortage, there is a real threat that we will starve. This is how our bodies work. Our bodies don’t really care that much if we can fit into that designer dress or suit we just bought and had custom made for us. Your body is more interested in whether you’ll be around tomorrow to procreate and keep the species going. That’s the big picture. Everything else (designer clothes, self-esteem, respect from others, etc.) is secondary. So what do you think happens if we starve ourselves to lose weight? Our bodies go on a food storage orgy. You start to be very stingy for using our food stores. You hang on and accumulate your fat reserves. That’s one of the reasons restrictive diets don’t work. So you must eat to lose weight. In fact, you want to make sure you’re keeping at least a minimum amount of calories coming in every day so you don’t trigger that hunger-accumulation program that’s hardwired for our survival.

Back to breakfast.

Breakfast literally breaks the fast we just experienced all night. We have not eaten now for the longest period of time during our 24 hour day. When we wake up in the morning, the quickest way to let your survival monitor know that all is well and that we are not starving is to eat something. Start feeding your body as soon as you can after waking up and your body’s metabolism kicks in and starts burning the fat resources you’ve been accumulating as well as the new foods you’re eating. It returns your metabolism to its normal waking rate after it has slowed down during your sleep period. This will ensure that you burn the food you eat as well as the old food you stored as fat.
