In 1938, Lee Byung-chul founded Samsung as a trading company. Growth diversified into the areas of food processing, textiles, securities, retail, and insurance over the next three decades. In the late 1960s, Samsung entered the electronics industry, followed by the construction and shipbuilding industries in the mid-1970s. Samsung split into four business groups, following Lee’s death in 1987. Samsung’s four business groups are: Samsung Group, CJ Group, Shinsegae Group and Hansol Group. Samsung has particularly increased globalization in its activities and electronics since 1990. Its most important sources of revenue are mobile phones and semiconductors.
