Trust in the Lord and Go to the Hole

This is my new favorite quote. Now to understand it you must know what “go to the hole” means. Going to the hole is a basketball term for going hard at the basketball to score a goal. In essence it means “Take it to him!”

Vince Carter is considered by many to be the next Michael Jordan. He plays for the Toronto Raptors and is a staple of featured night shows.

A few weeks ago, his mother was being interviewed on national television and the interviewer asked her what advice she had given her son.

She replied, “All I say to Vincent (let your mother call you by your full name on national TV) is trust in the Lord and go to the hole.”

So I got to thinking about that, and it makes a lot of sense. The confusion for so many people is what responsibility to put in God’s hands and what responsibility to take on ourselves.

Some people take everything upon themselves when they should instead trust that God is in control and there is no way you can control those things anyway. Those things are better left in the hands of the Omniscient.

I will give you an example from my own life. I speak on a regular basis. I probably gave 75 speeches a year. Now, not everyone is going to like what I have to say. I leave those people in God’s hands, because I can’t control people’s reactions to me. But I still go to the hole every time I speak!

On the other hand, there are people who simply think that God is going to do everything for them. As if they pay the rent because a manila folder will fall from the sky full of money just before the beginning of each month. When it doesn’t happen, they wallow “Why does God allow this to happen?” The answer? “Because you won’t take your head off and do what you’re supposed to do.

it is a balance. There are things that God is going to do and there are things that you have to do. The key is to understand which is which.

Another saying that I like is that we should pray as if it were up to God and work as if it were up to us.

So what do I encourage you to do today? Which is your charge? Mrs. Carter herself gives her son. The same one I give myself – Trust in the Lord and go to the hole!
