The dangers of drowsy driving

Driving requires motorists to remain alert and attentive. When drivers are tired, they often lose their ability to drive. As such, drowsy driving puts drivers at greater risk of causing accidents. In fact, studies show that people who drive while tired are up to four times more likely to cause a car accident compared to drivers who are well rested.

A motorist who increases his chances of causing a car accident is in substantial trouble. For comparison, drunk drivers are up to four times more likely to cause an accident than sober drivers. In other words, drowsy drivers can be just as dangerous as drunk drivers.

Drowsy driving is not illegal per se. For one, there is no definitive way to measure whether a person is tired other than their own word. However, because people cannot be indicted for being tired, people can hit the road even when they are truly in no condition to drive. However, if they drive unsafely, they can be charged with crimes such as reckless driving.

Motorists who sustain damage after drowsy drivers collide with their vehicles may be entitled to financial compensation for injuries resulting from the accident. While it is unfortunate that a drowsy driver only learns not to drive while tired after causing an accident, it is important to note that motorists are not left unprotected from bills and lost wages in the event of an accident with one of these people.

When fighting for compensation, motorists will need to take legal action against the negligent driver. Individuals seeking compensation are advised to seek experienced legal counsel to help them with their cases.
