Still Life – Old Master
The Scream painting is undoubtedly one of the most famous paintings by the master artist Edvard Munch. The original name given to his painting was Der Schrei der Natur Oder Landau, which translates as, ‘of the natural landscapes around his house’. The painting is a masterpiece which have survived since the centuries, and it’s still on view at the prestigious museum in Amsterdam, known as the Van Gogh Museum.
This amazing artwork was originally intended to be shown in the Royal Academy in London, but was overlooked. A member of the jury suggested that he paint the painting in oils instead of on canvases, and this idea was adopted by the artist himself. He used a type of oil that could be applied with a brush. The resulting effect was breath taking, and he completed the painting in just a few hours. The entire process took less than two days from start to finish, and the painting was done using only a handful of paints.
The origins of the painting are unclear, but it is thought that the name of the painting was inspired by the noises heard when a wild animal was running across the field. Munch used various tones of browns and greens, along with various effects such as shadows and highlights to give the illusion that the scene is mountainous or extremely far away. He based the colours on the sunlight streaming through the windows of his house, which helped to give the impression that the colours had been blown out of the canvas. The oil painting still looks fresh and crisp today, and is well worth a look for any art lover.

The Scream painting now resides in the prestigious Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. It is part of the major art collection of the museum, which includes other renowned works by other artists including Rembrandt and Warhol. The museum is currently holding 50 paintings which were bought by one of the leading modernist artists, Vincent Van Gogh. The work of Van Gogh can also be seen at many of the major galleries in London. The great Dutch artist Rembrandt is also well known to have influenced Van Gogh. Rembrandt’s famous orange and yellow salve has often been described as having an oil-like quality to it, which also has a similar effect on the viewer.
As with other paintings of the time, the Scream painting is oiled on canvas. The process of drying the painting off involves putting a layer of thinned vegetable oil onto the canvas, before working on top of it a second thinner paint layer. After this, the painting would finally be framed and dried in a traditional frame. As with other works of Van Gogh, the accuracy of the detail and the colour of the oil paints are highly prized amongst art lovers and collectors. In fact, some of the original oil paintings are sold as art reproductions, allowing experienced art buyers to enjoy art as if it were a priceless masterpiece.
Due to the popularity of the Scream painting and the quality of its oil paints, the artwork has become something of a rarity for sale. Of course, the painting does not come cheap. At some prices, the painting may even be more expensive than the actual oil used in creating the artwork! For art fans and collectors, owning a true version of the famous ‘Scream’ still life is considered to be an extremely valuable asset, one that would easily replace a particular edition of an art book or an expensive album.
