Murdered: Soul Suspect PC Game Review

Murdered: Soul Suspect is an adventure game (yes, that genre you’ve almost forgotten about!), and it really comes close to what true fans of the genre would enjoy. Of course, it can hardly be compared to Syberia or The Longest Journey, but playing this one can give you a couple of hours of fun… if you’re not too picky.

In this game, you play Police Inspector Ronan O’Connor, who is… well, dead.

the plot and the main idea are great. Generally speaking, paying a ghost that can make things happen in the real physical world is awesome. Especially in an adventure game. The other unique thing is that – Hello! – you don’t have any zombie type, Resident Evil type, war type, etc. events that happen to you. Any enemies you encounter and have to “fight” are not really there to kill you! Yeah, (SPOILER) you can run from them… Obviously all the NPCs are a bit low carb as they cover a really small space. Even if you defeat a demon in the same room as another one of them, the second guy won’t pay attention to you.

the romantic drama – You have a wife named Julia, who has been the reason for your life changes. So her death makes you feel pretty sad and spring into action with a lot less brains and a lot of aggression. This is also, I guess, the main reason why we (playing as him) go to the first scene where we end up dead.

My opinion? I like this as much as I can; I mean… a lot of us need something tragic to happen in someone’s life, just so we can feel them close. I find the romance useless to me, but for a game with the scopes and goals set by the producers, it’s obvious that this sort of thing needs to be there. What I liked (see the second sentence in this paragraph) is that they didn’t get her pregnant or turn him into a whiny father figure.

the real drama: Salem is a big nest of witches and well, being a tough guy can’t keep you safe from witchcraft, witch hunts and everything else that happened there in the past. You are even more suitable a victim for an influential enemy than a mere girl would be.

The twists and plots are finely incorporated in this game and it’s easy to like it. The only thing you need to know when buying this game is that it is an old school adventure game with a sense of mystery and lots of exploration zones and cool relaxed thinking time. This is not Far Cry, or Uncharted, or Resident Evil. However, it is also not Aura or Myst.

the gameplay on the other hand it is very basic and I love it! With the sole exceptions of the demons you need to eradicate, it’s all just a simple first-person point-and-click adventure but in a 3D world. You hardly have reason to worry and make mistakes. However, the only problems related to the game are the lack of real puzzles. Seems like it was too expensive (plus them making a 3D version of a sheriff-like police inspector in full outfit, cigarette and smoke included… like a ghost) or too difficult for the Airtight team, but… yes – a real adventure game needs a puzzle or two (at least) before it gets any action features.

Just so you know…

The game’s review from a fairly famous gaming website says: “The only way to get rid of Murdered’s really scary soul-sucking demons is to get right behind them, and the only way to get right behind them is to hide in the residue of individual ghost souls, which are close together and therefore create a kind of teleportation system for Ronan.”

Here is the source of the quote (I wouldn’t recommend you click here, but being ethical asks me to link to the source).

Well, this is pretty bad. For one reason, as I have already spoiled, you can run away from them. For another reason, you can hide in the walls. If you don’t get into their view range when they’re spinning, you can just pop out of the wall and “exorcize” them from this world.

One thing to know though: once the ritual was not performed correctly, these critters will follow you through walls and stairs until you get out of their range.
