Eligibility criteria to apply for the Diversity Lottery Program

The Green Cary lottery is the easiest way to obtain permanent immigrant status in the United States. However, success in obtaining a green card through the Diversity lottery program depends on your luck, as green card lottery winners are randomly selected from the pool of applications using an automated computer program.

However, to ensure your chances of winning, you must understand the basic eligibility criteria and other conditions to qualify for permanent immigrant status in the United States. You will find all the eligibility criteria required to apply to the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program.

Nationality of the Authorized Country

You can apply to the diversity lottery program only if you or your spouse are citizens of an authorized country. Residents of all countries cannot apply for Permanent Immigration status through the DV Lottery Program. For example, in last year’s lottery, residents of Anguilla, Bermuda, Brazil, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Cayman Islands, mainland China (persons born in Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR, and Taiwan are eligible to apply), Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Montserrat, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Pitcairn, Poland, South Korea, Saint Helena, Turks and Caicos Islands, United Kingdom , United States and Vietnam were not able to participate.

Therefore, you must make sure that your (or your spouse’s) country of origin is on the list of qualifying countries. In case your parents were born in a country to participate in the DV lottery program, then you are also eligible to apply for the Green Card lottery.

Educational or Professional Qualification

Based on criteria defined by the US government, you must have a high school diploma or equivalent certificate of completion of a 12-year course of elementary and secondary education. This is the minimum eligibility to apply for the Green Card lottery program. You can also apply for permanent immigrant status through the DV lottery program, if you have at least two years of work experience (within the last five years) in an occupation that requires at least two years of professional training.

You can get all other required details on the Department of State’s diversity visa online entry website after the start of online registration for the DV lottery program. Remember that if you do not meet the DV Lottery program eligibility criteria above, you cannot apply for the Green Card Lottery.
