Relationship

A saga of selfless love

All of us have received so many blessings from the Almighty, but we are generally unaware of the fact that there are many who are not as privileged as we are. Not all of us would muster the courage to walk a path that is not frequented by many. But there are some people who, against all odds, dare to walk unknown paths. Alice Thomas is one of those ladies and here is a brief summary of how she has made a difference in many lives.

Employed at a school in Nainital, Uttar Pradesh, India, Alice Thomas had to return to her native Kerala to treat her husband who lost his mental balance after a serious car accident. Adept at the arts, she took on the task of teaching trades to inmates at Trivandrum Central Jail to support her family. Her children, Sumesh and Neethi, were 3 and 1 years old respectively, when tragedy struck this family. She searched and squeezed every penny out of her, but to no avail as her husband could not be saved.

Work area

Her exposure to the life of convicted women in jail and their children made her see the other side of life. In the midst of adversity, Alice Thomas stepped forward to help the afflicted. Five years ago, when one of the inmates handed over her 2-year-old son to Alice, her compassionate heart couldn’t say no. With practically nothing but a caring and loving heart, she accepted the child (Anup) and raised him along with her own children. This was the beginning of Divine Children’s Home (DCH), a warm and loving sanctuary for destitute children in Trivandrum.

Alice Thomas’ contribution to society

Currently, Alice Thomas has spread her wings of love to around 30 children housed at DCH. With the mission of respecting and valuing the dignity of human life, DCH provides shelter, food and education to disadvantaged children without any discrimination. The children, abandoned by one and all, are considered part of an extended family.

Many of the children’s parents are serving long sentences in the Central Jail. Forced down the path of ignominy by society and then treated as outcasts, these children are adopted by DCH and raised in a home environment to grow up as responsible citizens of society. The children, who could have become a nightmare for society without proper education and emotional support, have been given a new direction in life by Alice Thomas. What she has done for underprivileged children is not unique to them; encompasses the entire society of which we are all part!!!
