Safe online shopping: a complete step-by-step guide

As online shopping continues to grow at a tremendous rate, you’ll likely find yourself buying more items online rather than in your traditional brick-and-mortar stores. But while the online world may offer better prices, there are some new and different dangers to worry about. In this article, we present a guide to shopping online safely.

computer security

Secure shopping starts with a secure computer. Spent:

  • A modern and fully updated browser. Examples: Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Safari.
  • Antivirus software that includes modules to combat spyware and malware. If you’re not sure which one to choose, stick with the top providers in the field.
  • Don’t share your computer.

web browser security

There are extensions for your browser that will warn you if the site you are visiting is dangerous and/or operated by a dubious operator. Two main plugins (there are many others) are:

  • Web of Trust (WOT)
  • McAfee Site Advisor

Does the provider’s website look legitimate?

Look at the provider’s website thoroughly first. Check:

  • Although not a guarantee, look for third-party security certifications, such as BBB or TRUSTe.
  • The provider’s website should have disclosures and policies listed for things like privacy, shipping, and refunds.
  • They must have a mailing address and phone number listed.

Do your own research on the provider

If the seller is not a large, well-established dealer, do some preliminary research to see if they have any serious negative histories. Search for your name and/or domain name in user reviews and sites like:

  • Google or Google Shopping
  • BizRate
  • Amazon (if they are listed on the Amazon marketplace)

Is the price too good to be true?

Even in the online world, there is such a thing as “too good a deal.” And more often than not, your gut is probably right in thinking that it’s a scam or at least illegal, and that someone is being victimized.

Purchase and payment

Once you’re ready to shop, it’s time to whip out your credit card and purchase that item you’ve been craving. But first, here are some final checks:

  • Use a credit card and not a debit card It is much easier to check doubtful charges with a credit card or even cancel it in case the number is stolen.
  • The payment page must be protected by SSL. Look for the padlock symbol in your browser and the ‘s’ in ‘https’ in the web URL.
  • Never send your social security or bank account numbers, just your name, address, and maybe phone number.
  • Save and print your order confirmation page.
  • Check your credit card statement when you arrive and/or check it online.

That’s all, now you should be properly prepared. Address each of these issues and check back periodically to make sure your online shopping experiences are not only fun but safe as well.
