Mirror’s Edge – PlayStation 3 Demo Review

I first got the news from EBGames that the Mirror’s Edge demo will be available on November 6th, I guess it was brought forward 1 week and released today. It’s always a good thing! Unlike Little Big Planet, I’m still waiting for it to be shipped from Futureshop, it said “Shipped” but I haven’t seen it in my mailbox yet.

Anyway on demo.

My god, that was literally what I said to myself when I was playing this game, I have never had this much excitement in a long time! Though the demo lasted 20-25 minutes max (unless you keep dying). The game is similar to The Bourne Conspiracy, where you have to act quickly, otherwise you will be captured/killed. Compared to Bourne, I think Mirror’s Edge is better.

Faith, your character tells you the story in comic style during the load, what’s more, it’s always better to watch something that moves instead of the boring old “loading” text. The first part of the demo starts with some tutorials on how to move, jump, slide under objects, and climb. Apart from the basics, you will learn to disarm from behind or in front, shoot or throw the weapon. Thats not all! You’ll also learn how to do crazy stunts like running horizontally on a wall, then spin around and jump to the opposite side (sorry, I tried my best to describe it). It’s basically 3 button presses, but you really need to time your presses. So you can chain your moves and do something crazy. One thing I love about the controls is that most of the actions are done using only L1.

The second part is real where you have to jump, move or climb to deliver a package to the other Celeste runner. In between, you have to run from hostiles and/or fight your way through. Let me tell you, playing the second part was EXCITING!

The graphics are AMAZING and can run at Full HD 1080p. I especially like the way the lighting is done. The whole city looks very realistic. I couldn’t stop taking photos while playing and the graphics are very good. Definitely a treat for the eyes.

I can’t really comment much on the music, there is only one track and a good one of course. It feels like the opening music for Metal Gear Solid.

If you haven’t downloaded the demo, do so! You do not know what you’re missing!

I really appreciate game companies posting game demos because it allows us as gamers to try out games before we buy, instead of making all the assumptions and then taking the risk of buying something we don’t like to play. Reading reviews and watching trailers from Gamespot and Gametrailers helps a bit, but you can never be sure until you’ve played the games YOURSELF.
