Minor League Baseball Review and Preview – Jed Lowrie

Below is a review and sneak peek into the 2009 season of Boston Red Sox shortstop and former minor league prospect Jed Lowrie. What he did last season and what to expect in 2009. This is what I wrote last season:

“The Red Sox have had trouble finding a productive shortstop since nomar garciaparra he was traded, and it can be argued that they didn’t see much production in Nomar’s last few years in Boston anyway. Lowrie could be the answer to Boston’s problems at the position. The former supplemental first-round draft pick has settled into the position after flirting with second base, and it was an appropriate indefinite move with young Dustin Pedroia enshrined at second base. The 23-year-old hit .298 last season between Double-A and Triple-A, and also posted an outstanding walk rate of 13 home runs and 47 doubles. While he wasn’t unproductive before last season, 2007 was his breakout year as a minor league player.Julius Lugo he starts the season at shortstop, but could be moved in a trade if Lowrie puts in a strong spring training and Triple-A push early in the season. At worst, he will be a quality utility in the near future.”

Julio Lugo’s struggles and injuries allowed Lowrie to reclaim the shortstop job and continue with it later in the year. Lowrie was able to hit a respectable .258-2-46 in 260 at-bats during his rookie season. The Red Sox are apparently keeping Julio Lugo next season, which could hamper Lowrie’s ability to stay in the majors if he slowly comes out of the gate. Still, the Red Sox have to be happy with what they got from Lowrie in his first season and what to expect from him going forward.
