Having descended from the ancient “Alaunt” and “Molosser” dog breeds, the English Mastiff is actually the oldest British dog breed. For many centuries, this mastiff was used as a fighting dog. The Brazilian Mastiff has many different ancestors, including bloodhounds, bulldogs, and mastiffs from Europe. It was originally bred to protect plantations in Brazil. More so than other Mastiffs, this breed has a very keen sense of smell that it surely inherited from its Bloodhound ancestors. These dogs can be used for hunting, as they possess all the necessary skills to track and catch prey.

The American Bandog Mastiff hybrid is relatively new to the scene, having been bred from American Pit Bull Terriers and Neapolitan Mastiffs, only in the last 40 years or so. They were originally bred by a veterinarian with the intention of creating the “perfect watchdog”. With his easy, docile temperament and powerful, athletic physique, the American Bandog Mastiff may be just that.
