Does it make sense to renew the kitchen cabinet?

There are a number of situations where cabinet refinishing is a very practical and affordable solution to changing the look of your kitchen cabinets. The cabinet reconditioning process can be completed much faster than a replacement project and the cost can be up to half the price of installing new cabinets. The caveat is that you have to be happy with your current kitchen layout because the cabinets cannot be moved to a new location.

Cabinet repair typically involves replacing doors and drawer fronts and placing matching veneer pieces over other exposed areas. The installer will use your existing cabinet frame for the project, so as long as your current cabinets are structurally sound, this type of kitchen remodel will work. Once all the cabinet doors and drawers are removed, the veneer pieces are cut to size and glued to all visible parts of the cabinet frame. The sheet metal parts are very thin and have a self-adhesive back so they stick well to the surface. Matching trim strips are often used to cover the area where the cabinet meets the wall to cover any gap.

There are a wide variety of options when it comes to the type of wood and stain to veneer your cabinets. Leading manufacturers have over 400 selections of solid woods, door styles and finishes to suit your tastes. They also offer the latest options for outfitting your cabinets that weren’t available when your old cabinets were made 15 or 20 years ago. Pull-out shelves for lower cabinets will add functionality to your kitchen and give you more storage space, lazy shelves will make things stored in corner cabinets more accessible, and you can outfit one of your lower cabinets with a trash bin to save.

There are other modern conveniences that can be brought into the kitchen while doing your kitchen remodel. Do you want a microwave that hangs over the stove? Your installer can adapt your current cabinet build to accommodate that. Contractors can also modify your current layout to convert an existing set of cabinets into a large pantry. If you have the room, the contractor may also add an additional cabinet as part of the project. If you’ve always wanted an island in your kitchen for entertaining and food preparation, now is the time to do it.

One of the main advantages of going the cabinet relining route is that the entire job can be completed in less than a week. Instead of losing the use of your kitchen for weeks, a renovation job can be done in a matter of days. There’s also no hassle of figuring out where to go with everything that’s stored in your cabinets when the kitchen is dismantled. When you do a cabinet revamp, most of the things in your cabinets won’t even need to be moved.
