Benefits of a holiday in Khao Lak

Khao Lak is an area north of Phuket in the Phang-Nga province of Thailand. It is an area comprising a long stretch of beaches on the Andaman coast that is growing in popularity with those who want to experience the natural beauty and fascinating culture of Thailand.

It can be a bit confusing to talk about Khao Lak because the name is often used to refer to beaches from Bangsak beach in the north to Khao Lak beach in the south. ‘Khao Lak’ is also often used to refer to Nang Tong Beach and the nearby town of La On, which is often considered the hub of the area as this is where most of the resorts, shops , bars and restaurants.

The Khao Lak area was devastated by the 2004 Indian tsunami. It quickly recovered and there are no apparent signs of the natural disaster apart from a small naval boat left in the jungle to commemorate those who lost their lives in the tragic tidal wave.

For those who want to enjoy a beach vacation but don’t enjoy the high prices, crowds and seedy parts of Phuket or Koh Samui, Khao Lak is a good option. It has a number of pristine beaches, most of which are uncrowded. The only two beaches that get crowded are Nang Tong and Bang Niang. Nang Tong, in particular, is lined with sun loungers, restaurants, and resorts along the beach. There is also a gazebo just behind the beach with a great view of the area.

Pakarang Beach stands out for having a beach break. It is one of the few places in Thailand where it is possible to practice surfing. You can rent a board at Bang La On.

There are two highlights in Khao Lak. The first is diving in the Similan and Surin Islands. These are the national parks. The reefs around the islands have the best diving in Thailand and are ranked among the top ten dive sites in the world by National Geographic magazine.

The other great attraction of the region is the Lamru National Park. It is a park with tropical jungle and coastal regions. Elephant treks to waterfalls and snorkeling off the coast are possible.

For those seeking culture, there are some sea gypsy settlements to visit on the islands off the coast. A trip to nearby Phang-Nga Bay is also a good idea. This is the location of the iconic James Bond Island (used for The man with the golden gun). Also in the bay is the fascinating Koh Panyi. It is an artificial floating island inhabited by Muslims. There is even a soccer field on the island. This became the subject of a movie that was made about Koh Panyi.

Accommodation in Khao Lak is mostly mid-range with a few 5-star resorts and cheap bungalows. It is a better value destination than Phuket. The nightlife around Bang La On is lively without being rowdy or seedy. It is an ideal area for families.

So if you feel like trying somewhere new in Thailand, go to Khao Lak.
