3 super fun backyard activities for kids who love nature

Nature and the great outdoors are indeed the best playground for children. However, not all the time parents can take them camping, to the beach or to a state park. While a nearby park is a good option, kids can get bored of repetition. But, did you know that you don’t have to leave the house for the little ones to enjoy nature and outdoor activities? All you need is your backyard!

Assign a special place outdoors

In your backyard or at your local park, let your child choose a “special place” that he will return to often. Let them know that it is their place and theirs alone, as this will further encourage them to spend time outdoors.

Visit this place often to just sit with your little one: to observe the wildlife, identify the trees and other fauna around or even the local birds and animals.

Learn about backyard critters

This is something fun for curious little ones! They too will learn a lot. You’ll need a field guide or photo list of common garden bugs (there are tons on the internet). You will also need an old scrap board to lay on the ground. Check from time to time after a few days to a week if insects have accumulated under the dash.

Once you see a variety, you can ask the children to go outside, with magnifying glasses, to identify and observe the different critters.

dig in the ground

This activity is bound to be messy, but it will be extremely fun and educational. What child doesn’t want to play in the soft dirt and mud? With his supervision, provide your child with a shovel and a piece of soft dirt in which he can dig. To make outdoor play more fun, add a bucket full of water to make mud.

Children can explore by finding things in the dirt like different sizes and shapes of rocks, roots, bulbs, and even worms. Don’t worry about the mess, it won’t compare to the super fun childhood memory your child will make and remember for years to come.

Nothing educates children better than nature and the outdoors. It can be quite challenging and sometimes tricky, but it will all be worth it. Try any of these super fun activities for kids in the garden!
