3 main causes of itchy stretch marks

Stretch marks make people extremely self-conscious and develop low self-esteem. Not only that, stretch marks can also cause a lot of physical discomfort. Many people complain of the itchiness that accompanies stretch marks. But what exactly are the causes of itchy stretch marks?

Small raised red spots that develop in stretch marks and itch at the same time can be a polymorphic pregnancy rash or PEP. PEP is basically a rash that could spread to other parts of the body such as the chest, arms, and thighs. It is known to be associated with stretching of the skin, which generally occurs in women during pregnancy when there is rapid weight gain. The itching sensation often goes away in about 7 days, however it may not go away completely until after delivery. If the itching becomes almost unbearable, you may be prescribed antihistamines or a steroid cream.

There are other causes of PEP (also known as PUPPP or itchy urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy). PUPPP is also known to run in families, usually traced back to the father’s side. Upon receiving the signal from the doctor, you can use natural stretch mark creams to alleviate the severity of the itch and treat the stretch marks at the same time. The good thing about natural stretch mark creams is that they contain powerful and soothing properties like aloe vera.

A main cause of PUPPP other than pregnancy is rapid weight gain. On average, people with PUPP gain more weight and babies weigh more than normal. It is understandable that a rash can develop along with stretch marks because stretch marks basically form on skin that has been stretched too far to its limits and becomes very sensitive. The skin becomes stretched, dry, and inflexible, making it more prone to PUPPP. The results are itchy stretch marks with reddish bumps all over.
