What is the success rate of the Nutrisystem diet?

Sometimes I get correspondence from people asking me what the typical success rate of the Nutrisystem diet is. Some ask how much weight has been successfully lost and others ask how much weight is being successfully maintained in the long term. In the next article, I’ll look at information from the company and clinical trials to try to answer these questions.

There is no shortage of Nutrisystem success stories: I suspect that if you have found this article, you will already see many of the “success stories” on the company website. Some of these are undoubtedly from famous spokespersons. But, most of them come from normal people from all walks of life. In fact, there are so many that they have been divided into 9 different categories. In other words, the stories start with a 20 to 29 pound weight loss and go to people who have lost more than 100 pounds. So if you are looking for people who have been successful, these examples are very easy to find.

The company doesn’t have a success rate on its site, although it says you can expect to lose around 2 to 3 pounds per week. So for details, let’s look at the clinical trials below.

Clinical trials that help us evaluate the success rate of Nutrisystem: I’m going to see a couple of clinical trials. The first is a two-year study from 2000, the results of which were published in the American Journal of Physiology, Endocrinology, and Metabolism. This study looked at postmenopausal women who averaged a weight loss of about 21 pounds, which is about 10 percent of their body weight. The study found that 78 percent of the weight loss was due to fat stores. The researchers then followed the women within the two-year period. The women maintained 35% of the weight loss without any additional diet.

Now, I will move on to a clinical trial that studied the effectiveness of the Nutrisystem diet in people with type 2 diabetes. This study was conducted at Temple University School of Medicine. Trial 68 followed type 2 diabetics while they were dieting. Half received the Nutrisystem diabetic diet and half received a diabetic diet in the hospital. People who took the Nutrisystem lost an average of 18 pounds and saw significant reductions in blood sugar, while people who followed the hospital diet lost an average of 1.3 pounds.

So both trials show that the participants are successful. I think the real question most people have is if this diet is really going to work for them or if they are somehow going to be the exception to the rule.

Determine if Nutrisystem will be a success for you: As I mentioned, I think that when people ask about the success rates of a diet, what they really want to know is whether the diet is really going to be a success for them. They want to be sure that they will do as well as the “typical” dieters who have seen the results.

You would have to argue that if you are on the diet like most people, then you would be eating significantly fewer calories, sugars, and carbohydrates while consuming more protein and fiber. So in itself, it will mean that you are taking in fewer calories than you are burning, which leads to weight loss.

People also often have concerns about the taste of food, but this diet is generally thought to be one of the best in this category with options like pizza, tacos, and ravioli. Serving sizes are highly controlled and the carbohydrate to protein ratio is tightly controlled to help you burn more body fat.

Unless you plan to cheat drastically or add too many sides (as opposed to what is recommended), you cannot avoid eating far fewer calories, fat, and carbohydrates than is normal for you, which generally leads to successful weight loss for the most.
