If you want to send email on the go, you may encounter a serious problem. As you change locations, you probably change a network that connects you to the Internet. So if you try to use Outlook (or any other email client) to send an email from some public hotspot in the airport with your usual settings, you will most likely get blocked. The SMTP relay service is a solution for that.

This simple guide will help you with the exemplary configuration of your Android phone or tablet to work with the SMTP service. You just need to have an account in one of the available services. To learn more about the service and how to get it, just follow the link at the bottom of the article. There are many SMTP relay services; just google one of them.

So if you have your account, let’s go to the guide itself!

1. Add a new email account on your phone.

Just go to your email app and add a new account. You will probably need to put your email address registered with your chosen SMTP service and a password for your account. Then click Manual Setup.

2. Choose pop3 as the account type.

3. Configuration of the incoming mail server.

You have to put some data about your email. You can usually get them from your email service provider, for example your ISP. You will need your username, a password, a pop3 server address, an appropriate port number, and a security type. All of them should be verifiable for you on your email service provider’s site. But I have a tip for you: ask Google like this: pop3 port configuration place:[your email service provider domain]. For example, type this query for AOL account in Google search: pop3 port settings site:aol.com. One of the first few pages should show your settings!

4. Configuration of the outgoing mail server.

This is the most important part. Typically, you would also use your email service provider’s settings. But in order to use all the assets of your new SMTP relay account, we will use your SMTP server address as our outgoing mail server. Remember that you must first have an account. There are also free options available, so you can test the usefulness of this. You need to check the SMTP server address provided by your chosen SMTP relay service. Set this as an outgoing mail server. The port number should also be checked on your service provider’s site. However, there is a good chance that 2525 will do the job. In some cases it can also be 25, 8025 or 587, but 2525 will probably work just fine. Follow the link at the end of this guide for more details about it. Regarding the type of security and Require login part: check them also on the site of your provider. For username and password, you should probably write your account details.
