Classic Game Review: Zossed in Space

Zossed in Space is a machine language program that challenges you to pilot your commercial ship through 100 sectors of space, overcome a variety of problems, accumulate 100 commercial units, and destroy 10 enemy ships. You have 3 ways to refuel, 2 ways to rack up business units, and dozens of ways to die trying. Your ship moves from the bottom of the screen to the top for each sector. As it appears at the bottom of the next sector, the scene changes. And if there was a chunk of antimatter or a meteor there, BANG!

There are more than a dozen different types of sectors, from an antimatter maze to a black hole and a vortex. After you’ve gone over them several times, you will find a strategy that will usually get you through it. Some of them are so totally random that they defy analysis. Getting over this will not be easy, no matter how much experience you have. Another cool thing about Zossed in Space is the use of sound. It is not just an ornament as, in many cases, it is the only warning you will receive that a problem has arisen.

While this is an arcade-style game, the graphics are its weakest feature. Surprisingly, this stopped bothering me after I had played a few games. The lack of a game save routine bothered me the most, although you can put the game on hold while answering the phone or preparing dinner. This is the type of game that you can introduce to a visitor with just a couple of minutes of instruction, as well as play yourself continuously. If you find yourself stuffing too many coins into arcade machines, this is a pretty good alternative. My rating for this game is 2.9 out of 5.
